National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University has a long history and inherits the fine traditions of Tangshan Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiaotong University. After resuming the school in Taiwan, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction, the Department of Transportation Engineering was approved in 1978. However, because the courses are similar to civil engineering, It was renamed “Department of Civil Engineering” in 1979.
After years of expansion and development, the faculty and equipment of the department are of scale. In terms of faculty, there are currently 29 full-time teachers (including 17 professors, 7 associate professors, 3 assistant professors, and 2 being recruiting), 1 project professor, 1 contracted professor and 18 part-time teachers, all of whom are PhDs from top universities, and many of them have won various awards at home and abroad, such as the National Executive Yuan Outstanding Research Award from the Scientific Committee, Academic Award of Ministry of Education, Structural Excellence Award, Ta-You Wu Memorial Award From National Science Council, and so forth.
In terms of students, there are around 314 undergraduate students, 186 graduate students in the master’s degree program, and around 61 students in the doctoral program. In addition, there are 15 department assistants and research assistants to assist in administrative, experimental, and research work. The purpose of the low student-teacher ratio is to allow every student to receive adequate guidance.
