1. Application of Information Technology in Civil Engineering

In this age of rapid information technology (IT) development, computers are no longer just for computing. The spread of the internet, growth of artificial intelligence, and development of computer and wireless technology have led to the further integration, intelligence, and connection of information technology. Meanwhile, todays structures have become bigger and ever more complex due to advanced engineering techniques and increased needs. It is then, without a doubt, of the utmost importance to further apply the knowledge of IT to the complex issues of civil engineering.

2. Information Technology at NCTU Civil Engineering

In Taiwan and abroad, National Chiao Tung University is known for its information technology and electrical engineering. In addition, many members of this faculty conduct IT related research. With such an advantage, the Department of Civil Engineering plans to establish an Information Technology Application division to integrate IT related research for application in structural engineering, hydraulic and ocean engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering, and construction engineering and management.
This division shall emphasize the application of information technology across different fields. Students of this division shall pursue courses in one or two fields of civil engineering (structural, hydraulic, geotechnical, surveying, and construction management) in order to build a strong academic foundation of those specialties, while gaining a basic knowledge of information technology from courses provided by other departments. Related courses currently offered by the department include Computer-Aided Engineering Design, Applied Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering, Information System of Construction, Geographic Information System, and Hydraulic Information System.
