Introduction

The school has a long history and inherits the fine traditions of Tangshan Institute of Technology and Shanghai Jiaotong University. After resuming the school in Taiwan, in order to meet the needs of national economic construction, the Department of Transportation Engineering was approved in 1967. However, because the courses are similar to civil engineering, It was renamed "Department of Civil Engineering" in 1988. After years of expansion and development, the faculty and equipment of the department are of scale. The outstanding talents cultivated over the past two decades have been invested in domestic civil engineering related fields and have made great contributions to national construction. However, in recent years, people’s environmental awareness has increased and they have begun to attach importance to economic and engineering construction, which has led to changes in the environment and natural ecology. Civil engineers must also consider the impact on the environment when planning and constructing infrastructure. On the other hand, the depletion of petrochemical energy and the declining natural resources, as well as the global warming and sea level rise caused by the strengthening of the greenhouse effect, have brought severe challenges to Taiwan's sustainable development.

Civil engineers shoulder the dual mission of improving the quality of human life and ensuring the safety of human life. Therefore, in the future, the teaching and research of this department will integrate the needs of human life and the overall balance of energy, ecology, and environment (Energy, Ecology, Environment, EEE). , And aims to cultivate a new generation of civil engineers and lead the cross-field innovation and excellence research of civil engineering. This department is also known worldwide for the field of electronic information and communication technology, and it is located next to the Hsinchu Science Park, the innovation base of Taiwan’s science and technology. It has huge high-tech resources to support the research of cutting-edge civil engineering technology and provide civil engineers with advanced technology. The opportunities used in the construction of high-tech factories are the unique development advantages of this department. The students cultivated in this department not only have the sufficient conditions to become a good civil engineer, but also have the opportunity and potential to enter the high-tech field.

After years of expansion and development of the department, the teachers and equipment are of scale. Regardless of its teaching or research performance, the department ranks among the top universities in the country in the fields of structural engineering, construction management, water conservancy and ocean engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying and spatial information, and information technology. In terms of faculty, there are currently 29 full-time teachers (including 21 professors, 6 associate professors, and 2 assistant professors), and 9 part-time teachers, all of whom are PhDs from top universities at home and abroad, and many of them have won the National Executive Yuan Outstanding Research Award from the Scientific Committee. In terms of students, there are currently about 323 undergraduate students in this department, about 209 graduate students in the graduate program of the research institute, and about 97 graduate students in the doctoral program. There are also 16 department assistants, research assistants, etc., to assist in administrative, experimental, and research work. Compared with the civil engineering departments of universities at home and abroad, the student-teacher ratio in this department is low, and every student can receive adequate guidance.

In order to improve the effectiveness of education so that graduates can better meet the needs of the future labor market, the department is currently actively reforming the curriculum, strengthening the training of students at school, not only making civil engineering subjects more refined, but also opening "ecological "Engineering", "Computer Application in Construction Management", "Introduction to Global Positioning System" and other university elective courses and "Coastal Landscape and Ecological Design", "Global Positioning System", "Construction and Construction Enterprise Intelligence", "Large Project Finance Institute courses such as "Learning", "Telemetry", "Application of Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering", to ensure that professional education is synchronized with the progress of the times and the development of technology, introduce new technologies in other fields, and expand the field of civil engineering with emerging industries . In the future, the courses and research of this department will continue to develop towards the following themes:

  1. Application of Information Communication and Nanotechnology in Civil Engineering
  2. Research on the prevention and control of vibration (earthquake) damage of high-tech factory

Our Philosophy

Civil engineering is the discipline most closely related to people's lives. For example, transportation, urban construction, water supply and sewage engineering, dams, harbors, bridges, tunnels, housing construction, and environmental planning are all within the scope of civil engineering. Undoubtedly, it is the task of civil engineers to conquer nature and create a more civilized and better living environment.

Due to the increasing scale of civil engineering, as far as construction is concerned, it is no longer capable of intensive manpower, and the content of the project is becoming more and more complex, and it is not easy to operate with simple machines. In order to enable engineering design, construction, and machine tool operation to keep pace with the times, to have innovative breakthroughs, to improve academic research standards, and to train senior engineering design and construction personnel, it is urgent.

The department will continue to expand and grow in line with the future development needs and manpower needs of the society to cultivate first-class civil engineers. As the department has first-class teachers and abundant equipment, coupled with a beautiful school environment and simple school spirit, it is indeed the most ideal place for young students to study.

Development Plan

The future development of the department will focus on the improvement of teaching and research quality, with a view to providing more and better services to the domestic civil engineering community. In terms of teaching, the improvement of the university courses will not only enable students to broadly understand the civil sciences, but also increase the courses in human care (including history, culture, environment, society, politics, etc.), and will also focus on topics The way of speech is to strengthen the humanistic quality of students. The improvement of the courses of the graduate school, in addition to the study of special topics to enable students to better understand the problem-solving process, students must also understand the development trends of various aspects in their respective professional groups, so that students can better adapt to the social environment after graduation.
